Prep football: Colfax takes on familiar foe in season opener

The Colfax football team opens the 2014 season with a familiar opening day opponent in Argonaut.

It’s the third straight season the Falcons have started with the Mustangs, and the teams have split the first two matchups.

In 2013, Colfax beat Argonaut, 28-20. But this season, Colfax will also have to travel to Jackson to face Argonaut. Last time the Falcons went to Argonaut, they lost 28-21.

The Mustangs are coming off a 5-5 season, where they finished third in the Mother Lode League and just missed the playoffs.

Argonaut returns starters from last season at running back and quarterback. Senior running back Lucas Fronek leads the Mustang charge, along with fellow senior running back Joey Guidi and senior quarterback C.J. Wynne.

While Argonaut returns most of its offensive weapons, the Falcons, who went 9-3 last season, have reloaded at the offensive skill positions, with the exception of running back Tim Rawlins.

Now in his senior year, Rawlins, will shoulder a heavier load as new Colfax quarterback Marcus Jackson gets acclimated. Rawlins, a three-year varsity player, is coming off a 2013 season in which he ran for 1,014 yards and six touchdowns in just eight games. Rawlins missed last season’s matchup with Argonaut with an injury.

Jackson, who was the second leading rusher for Colfax (313 yards) and also caught 22 passes for 140 yards, takes over at quarterback for Michael Wilson, the school’s all-time passing touchdowns leader. One major difference from last season to this one is the Falcons receivers. Wilson had three senior targets (Chas Reisinger, Kyle Bryant, and Chris Harshman) that accounted for 212 receptions, 3,277 yards and 29 touchdowns. Jackson will be throwing to a group of receivers who have yet to make a varsity catch.

It will be interesting to see how the Falcons fair on the road as the game at Argonaut is just one of four non-league away games for Colfax.

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Argonaut High School.
