The Nevada Union Jr. Miners football program opened the regular season Saturday with a slate of games against the Yuba City Jr. Honkers.
After a long day of gridiron grit at Hooper Stadium, the Jr. Miners managed a split with the Jr. Honkers, as NU won the Jr. Pee Wee and the Pee Wee games, but dropped the Jr. Midget and Midget matchups.
Jr. Pee Wees
NU 7, Yuba City 6
The Jr. Miners eked out a one-point victory against the Jr. Honkers to start the season off with a W.
Scoring NU’s lone touchdown was Larry Terronez, who finished the game with 75 yards on eight carries and the one score. Drew Wasley added 22 yards on three carries.
Terronez also led on defense with three tackles. Also chipping in on defense, helping to hold Yuba City to just six points was James Kinney and Austin Slade.
Drake Schlachter pitched in with his kicking prowess to help NU win the field position battle.
NU 24, Yuba City 7
The Jr. Miners ran all over Yuba City as they cruised to a 17-point win Saturday.
Leading NU on the ground was Jaxon Horne with nine carries for 90 yards and two touchdowns. A.J. Meyer added 43 yards on the ground and also reached pay dirt twice. Sayer Turnage rounded out the ground attack with 58 yards.
Through the air Justis Conway found Meyer twice for 25 yards.
Defensively the Miners were staunch, being led by Davis Webb’s five tackles, Turnage pitched in with four tackles and a sack, and Isaiah Carter wrapped up three tackles.
Yuba City 54, NU 19
The Jr. Honkers were simply too much for the Jr. Miners in both teams’ opener.
In the loss, Zach Fink carried NU’s offense with 11 carries for 66 yards and a touchdown. Ben Taylor ran for 43 yards and a touchdown, and Dillon Roberts gobbled up 39 yards.
In the passing game Charles Wilcoxen found Kyler Case twice for 25 yards.
On the defensive end, Trevor Neilson led the team with eight tackles, Sammy Slay took down seven Jr. Honkers and Seth Fisher wrapped up three.
A special teams highlight came from Tino Sanchez-Lane as the dynamic returner took a punt return back 64-yards for a touchdown.
Yuba City 60, NU 25
The Jr. Miners struggled to a lopsided loss to open the season Saturday, falling to the Jr. Honkers by 35 points.
Running well in the loss was Dawson Fay with 156 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries, including a long of 65. Fay also 164 kick return yards, three tackles and a sack.
Logan Lopez also ran for a touchdown for the Jr. Miners and tallied 60 yards on the ground for the day.
Leading the defense was Cameron Dallago with four tackles. Tyler Nofziger came up with a sack in the game as well.
