The Lake Wildwood USTA women’s 3.5 (65 and older) tennis team went to Napa in late June for the USTA Super Senior Sectionals and earned the right to represent Northern California in the National Tournament in Surprise Arizona next March.
The Lake Wildwood team took seven of it’s nine players to the USTA sectional tournament in Napa where they competed in a doubles tournament against other elite 65 and older teams from Northern California.
The tournament consisted of several head-to-head matches that were decided by three doubles matches.
Playing at the Silverado Resort in Napa and led by captain Mary McLean, the team from Lake Wildwood swept Milbrae, 3-0, in the first round. Lake Wildwood then swept Walnut Creek, and beat Saratoga 2-1 to reach the finals.
In the championship round, Lake Wildwood took on Marin County and prevailed, 2-1, to win the Northern California title. Lake Wildwood also won the tourney in 2011.
The Lake Wildwood team that won the NorCal title is comprised of local players from Lake Wildwood, Grass Valley and Browns Valley. In addition to team captain McLean, the squad includes Carol Wilson, Susan Browning, Sandy Martin, Nancy Eubanks, Marlene Soldani and Jewell Willis. The two members of the team that were unable to attend the tourney are Linda Bailey and Helen Hansen.
