Prep basketball titles up for grabs at Sleep Train

SACRAMENTO – The 2014 CIF State Basketball Championships presented by Farmers are set for Friday and Saturday at Sleep Train Arena, in Sacramento.

Twenty-four teams will compete for 12 state basketball titles. Teams in Divisions I, III and V will compete on Friday, while the Open Division and Divisions II and IV will compete on Saturday with first tip-off set for 10 a.m. each day.

Tickets are available through TicketMaster or at the Sleep Train Arena Box Office. Ticket prices per day start at $16 for adults and $10 for seniors (65+), children (5+) and students with a valid ASB card.

In the second year of the Open Division, the Mater Dei Boys (10-4 in championship games) return to the CIF Championships making their 15th State Finals appearance – the most among any team in State history – while Bishop O’Dowd (1-7) seeks their second state crown since 1981. In the Boys Division V game, St. Joseph Notre Dame (4-5) returns to battle for their fifth state title, while Renaissance Academy (0-1) is still looking for their first title since their lone 2008 state appearance.

Additionally, in the boys state championships we see the return of several teams. In D-II Folsom (1-0) returns to the title game for the first time since 1985; In D-III Sir Francis Drake (1-1) – won a title in 1982 and lost in 1994; and in D-IV Bishop Montgomery (2-1) – won consecutive championships 2000-01 and lost in 2009.

In the girls Open Division game, Long Beach Poly (5-1) seeks to capture their sixth state title after winning the Division I Championship last year, while Salesian (0-2) is eager for their first crown after making it to state the past two years (D-IV). Archbishop Mitty (D-III) returns to the championships in search of their sixth State title (5-4), while Sierra Canyon (D-IV) is looking to repeat after winning the Division V Girls Championship last year. In the girls Division-V game, Pinewood (5-2) will face La Jolla Country Day (3-3) for their sixth and fourth state championships respectively.

Four girls teams are attempting to claim their first state championship after previous appearances: In D-I Canyon Springs (0-1, ’85), in D-III Modesto Christian (0-2, ’02 and ’09) and in D-IV Justin-Siena (0-1, ’85).

Teams making their first state championship showing include: Monte Vista (Boys D-I), Centennial (Boys D-I), St. John Bosco (Boys D-II), Chaminade (Boys D-III), Moreau Catholic (Boys D-IV), Pleasant Grove (Girls D-I), Chaminade (Girls D-II), Santa Barbara (Girls D-III).
