Alumni: Nevada Union grad coaches Verrado to Ariz. state title

David Hopkinson, a 1997 Nevada Union graduate, led the Verrado High School Lady Vipers to an Arizona state Division-II championship in girls soccer in February and was named the Big Schools Coach of the Year by azcentral sports.

Hopkinson coached his team to a 17-2 record overall and was 10-0 in section play. During section play the Lady Vipers allowed just one goal against while scoring 61.

In the title game, Verrado beat No. 1 seed and four-time defending state champion Catalina Foothills in a shootout, 3-2.

“Sometimes it’s meant to be,” Hopkinson said in an interview with “There were times in the last couple seasons where I thought we had a good chance to win it, and before the tournament even started this year I thought, ‘Man, crazier things have happened. Maybe this is our year.’ And everything kind of went right for us. For the girls to win that (championship) game against a quality opponent like Catalina Foothills, it makes it even more special. And (winning Coach of the Year) is quite the honor.”

In Arizona, girls prep soccer runs from December through February.
