Alumni notebook: Ceo helps Texas Longhorns top Iowa

Stephanie Ceo, a 2012 Bear River graduate now with the University of Texas softball team, helped the Longhorns (17-13) string three wins together last week, beating North Texas twice and topping Iowa once.

Ceo, playing second base, went 5-for-6 with four RBIs over the three-game stretch. Ceo was 3-for-3 with four RBIs against Iowa alone.

Katie Mathis (Bear River 2010; San Diego State) and the Aztecs (19-8) are 3-1 in the San Diego Classic II with a pair of games left to play.

So far in the tourney, Mathis, playing second base, is 5-for-14 with three runs scored, two RBIs and a triple from the plate.

Brianna Nicholson (Nevada Union 2010; Cal State Stanislaus) and the Warriors (10-17) dropped three of four games to Cal State, Monterey Bay.

Nicholson, playing first base, went 1-for-8 from the plate with a pair of RBIs.

Courtney Ceo (Bear River 2010; University of Oregon) and the Ducks (23-3) won five straight to get into the Rainbow Wahine Classic Championship, but fell to James Madison in the title game.

Ceo played third base and went 10-for-23 from the plate with four runs scored and two RBIs.

Kendal Butterfield (Nevada Union 2010; Colorado State) and the Rams (15-5) won all five of their games in the Fresno State Classic.

Butterfield, playing left field, went 4-for-11 from the plate with three runs scored and an RBI in the tourney.

Maddie Phelps (Bear River 2012, Sierra College) picked up the win in a relief appearance against San Joaquin Delta College last week.

Phelps pitched two innings while giving up three hits and an earned run in the 9-5 victory.


Dusty Zeisler (Nevada Union 2012; Holy Names University) and the Hawks (10-16) have now lost 12 straight after dropping four to Dixie State.

Zeisler, playing shortstop and batting in the middle of the lineup, went 3-for-12 with a run scored over the four-game stretch.

Chris Porter (Nevada Union 2011; Cal State East Bay) and the Pioneers (14-10) split a four game series with Cal Poly Pomona.

Porter saw action in two of the four games, going 0-for-2 from the plate.

Brandon O’Callaghan (Nevada Union 2013; Yuba City Community College) and the 49ers (6-12) dropped a pair of games to Marin before winning the third in a three-game series.

O’Callaghan went 2-for-9 with an RBI and a stolen base as the designated hitter.

James Harris (Bear River 2012; Solano Community College) had a rough outing against Mendocino last week, lasting just one inning and allowing five runs, three of which were earned. Harris is 1-3 from the mound this season.


Jace Tiller (Nevada Union 2012; Folsom Lake Community College) and the Flacons took second place in the Big 8 Conference Tournament No. 3 at the Yolo Flyers Country Club. The Falcons shot 384 as a team, falling just four strokes short of the tourney winner Modesto (380).

Tiller shot a 76 for the Falcons, finishing third on the team.


Marc Hopkinson (Nevada Union 2009; Tabor College) and the Blue Jays were bounced from the NAIA Basketball Tournament Thursday after losing to Indiana Southeast, 77-75.

Hopkinson had four points and three rebounds in 18 minutes of play time in the loss.

Water Polo

Kara Dodd (Bear River 2011; UC Santa Cruz) played solid defense at several positions in the Banana Slugs victory against Fresno State and the losses to UC Berkeley and UC Davis “A” and “B” teams.

Sierra Pacific League Championships will take place April 5-6 at UC Davis. The Banana Slugs are 4-7 on the season.


Morgan Bachus (Bear River 2011; UC Santa Barbara) and the UC Santa Barbara rowing team won their opening day races in Newport Beach.

Bachus, the captain for the varsity team, raced against UC San Diego, Chapman and Arizona State.

The team next travels to UC Davis for a week of spring training and races in West Sacramento, and then returns to the area in mid-April for the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association races at Lake Natoma in Folsom.
