Sibley Bennallack-Hansen

Sibley Ann Bennallack Hansen passed away Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, following a long and worthwhile life spent almost entirely in her hometown of Grass Valley, Calif. She was 91.

A service in celebration of Sibley’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011, in the Sanctuary of the United Methodist Church. A gathering in adjoining Wesley Hall will be held immediately following.

Sibley was born in Grass Valley March 10, 1920. She was the eldest child of Francis and Susan Harrigan Bennallack, and was married to Arlie Orson Hansen for 64 years, until his passing in August of 2001.

Sibley received her bookkeeping/accounting education at Heald’s Business College in Sacramento and managed the office of the family business, Hansen Bros. Enterprises, from its inception in 1953, until she retired at the young age of 80.

She and Arlie loved to travel. Trips to Israel and China were among her favorites.

Sibley was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church of Grass Valley and served on the finance committee to fund the building of the new Wesley Hall and its commercial kitchen where the “Pastie Bakers” make pasties monthly.

She was a member of the Fidelis (church) Circle and enjoyed their monthly luncheon meetings. Sibley also taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, was a Cub Scout leader, Brownie and Girl Scout leader, a 4-H Cooking leader, a member of Eastern Star and a past Guardian of Job’s Daughters Bethel 102.

Sibley was a past president of Soroptimist International of Grass Valley, and received the Woman of Achievement Award and the Jessie Hughs award from SIGV. She had been named a “Hero of Nevada County,” was a volunteer at the Interfaith Food Ministry and supported many nonprofits to benefit children and those in need.

Sibley’s passions were faith, family and friends. She was an avid gardener, excellent cook, and a great and loving sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She will be missed by all who loved her, including her dear sister, Iris, and her husband Bob Schindhelm; son and daughter-in-law, Orson and Helen Hansen, their children, Ernie, Jeff and his wife, Andrea, their children, Savannah and Russell, Carrie Hansen, and Shawn Jeffrey and his wife, Allison; daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Lerry Peterson, their children, Craig Arthur and his wife Lauren, their children, Aidan and Nathan, James Arthur and his wife Deanna, Dale Peterson and his wife Rhonda, their children, Naomi and Kyle, and Jeff Peterson and daughter Peighton; daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Dave Aubin, their children Allison and Zachery, grandson, Vance Goss and his children, Will and Thomas.

Sibley is also survived by in-laws, Lila and Leonard Bednorz and MaryAlyce Hansen and by many cousins, nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and nephews and great-grand-nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Sibley was also preceded in death by brothers, Brian and Bret, and daughters, Karen and Chrissie, as well as numerous other dear family members.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Susan Harrigan Bennallack Scholarship fund, Hospice of the Foothills, The Friendship Club, CARE, Interfaith Ministries (Food Bank), the United Methodist Church or to the charity of choice.
