A memorial service will be held at noon Friday, Aug. 3, at Pioneer United Methodist Church, 1338 Lincoln Way, Auburn, for Richard J. Welch. A reception and military honors will follow at the Auburn Veterans Memorial Hall, 100 East St., Auburn. Mr. Welch, of Grass Valley, passed away July 22 after a brief illness. He was 76.
Mr. Welch was born to Jack and Hazel A. Welch in San Francisco. He attended college at the University of California, Davis where he studied animal science.
After serving in the United States Army for eight years during the early 1950s, he went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad. He followed this with a career as a facilities engineering manager for National Semiconductor and later for Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), both in Santa Clara.
After retirement from AMD, Mr. Welch and his wife, Dorothy, moved to Grass Valley where Mr. Welch realized his dream of owning enough land to plant a small vineyard and engage in his passion for grape growing and wine making. He also served as an officer for the Grass Valley Grape Growers Association.
Mr. Welch is survived by his wife, Dorothy; son and daughter-in-law, Gregory and Jill Welch of Bellevue, Wash.; daughter, Kristen Welch of San Jose; daughter and son-in-law, Shannon and Mark Koski of Carlsbad; grandchildren, Johnathan, Lauren and Olivia; step-sons, William Clarke of Nashville, Tenn., Ronald Clarke of Brush Prairie, Wash. and Robert Clarke of Broomfield, Colo.; step-daughters Patricia Lawry of Nashville, Tenn. and Kathleen Montgomery of Rocklin; and step-grandchildren Marci, Stephanie, Jason and Nathan. Mr. Welch was preceded in death by his parents and brother, William “Bill.”
