Peace Rally: Counter protest planned

A Vietnam War Veteran is organizing a counter-protest to the planned peace march in Grass Valley Saturday.

World-renowned peace activist Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a U.S. Army soldier, Casey Sheehan, who was slain in 2004 in Iraq, is leading the planned peace rally. It is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. at The Union parking lot at 464 Sutton Way, and will end at Sierra Mountain Coffee Roasters on Maltman Avenue.

Daniel Baldwin, who served in Vietnam, is calling on vets and anyone opposed to Sheehan to join him for a peaceful rally to protest the march.

He plans to stage his protest on the southern side of the Brunswick Road overpass. Baldwin fears the peace marchers will deface the memorial to a Vietnam veteran posted on the road there, he said.

He is also concerned Sheehan’s protest will spark people to mistreat veterans of the current wars in Afghanistan and Iraq when they return home, much as he says Vietnam veterans were mistreated during his time.

Baldwin served in the Marines in Vietnam from 1966-67.
