William S. "Bill" Beeman of Smartsville passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 18, 2013. He was 73.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Grass Valley United Methodist Church.
Bill and his wife Kay retired to the area six years ago, moving from San Jose after retirement to be closer to family. Beeman retired from a career in broadcast engineering, having been a partner, chief engineer and COO of KICU – TV 36 in San Jose for 22 years. During that time, KICU was the largest independently owned, non-network station in the Bay Area broadcast market. Previously, he had been chief engineer for the broadcast group owned by Ralph Wilson, owner of the Buffalo Bills.
Bill has been an active community leader in San Jose and in Western Nevada County. He served as treasurer and finance chair for the Grass Valley United Methodist Church, president of the Rotary Club of Penn Valley and has been active with the Boy Scouts of America, Penn Valley Firefighters Association and IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). While in San Jose, he served as council president for the local Boy Scout Council, having previously served in several countywide leadership roles in Scouting. His two sons are Eagle Scouts. He was instrumental in the formation of the KICU Charitable Foundation and the Penn Valley Rotary Foundation.
As a Rotarian, he received a Paul Harris Fellowship and was a Paul Harris Society member. He was a Silver Beaver recipient from Scouting and had received a James E. West Fellowship. He was an amateur astronomer and meteorologist and a ham radio operator.
Bill passed away while serving as a Scouting volunteer, assigned to conduct the annual accreditation of a large Scouting summer camp in Amador County. He was walking into the camp from the parking area and was later found along the trail. The camp medical personnel and sheriff took charge of the scene. He had been in recent good health but suffered a massive heart attack, according to the sheriff's chief deputy coroner.
Bill is survived by his wife of 49 years, Kay; sons Doug of San Antonio and Don (Karen) Phoenix; and four grandsons.
The family has asked that memorial contributions be directed to the Bill Beeman Memorial International Fund, c/o Penn Valley Rotary Foundation, PO Box 120, Penn Valley CA 95946. The local Rotary club will use income from these funds to support its international service projects.
