Obituary of Leonard Martin Sauer

Leonard Martin Sauer passed away on April 6, 2017 at the Auburn Oaks Care Home in Auburn, CA. He fought a courageous battle with cancer for almost two years. He was 83 years old. He was born to Mathias and Stella Sauer in Carpio, North Dakota, on June 25th, 1933. Leonard was a year old baby when he and his family moved to Nevada City in 1934.
In 1935 his parents bought 200 acres of land off hwy 49. There Matt and Stella and their 7 children developed and worked the land and made it their home for many years. After Leonard graduated high school, he joined the Navy and fought in the Korean War. After his discharge, he worked for many years in heavy construction as a crane operator, helping to build many of California's bridges and freeways. As Leonard got older, he developed heart problems which forced an early retirement in his forties. Leonard and his wife Donna enjoyed traveling, visiting family and friends. They also liked to go out to dinner at good restaurants. Leonard enjoyed his grandchildren and was food to each one of them through the years.
Leonard is survived by his loving wife Donna, his sister Helen and niece Rene of Sparks, NV, who kept in constant contact with him since his diagnosis. His son Arthur and partner Minnie and precious granddaughter Annika, who called every day or came to visit after his diagnosis. His nephew Don who called every day. His great nephew Adam who came over and did yard work and worked on our home when Leonard couldn't anymore. He loved his great uncle dearly. Leonard's grandson Jonathan of Roseville came up often and stayed and even went to Dr.'s appointments with us sometimes. His granddaughter Alayna of Mississippi and grandson Joe of Temecula, CA, all traveled here to spend time with their grandfather when he was hospitalized before he passed away. Leonard is also survived by 5 stepsons, Brett of Central Point, OR, Bart and Stephanie of Winston, OR, Brian and Teri of Roseburg, OR, Brent of Trail, OR, Brandon and Stacy of Greeley, CO. Also a granddaughter Alysia and Michael and great granddaughter Sophie of Salem, OR, as well as a brother-in-law, Jim and Jean of Chicago Park, sister-in-law, Anita and sister-in-law Dolores of Cedar Ridge. Also sister-in-law Susan and Bud of Merlin, OR, sister-in-law Gloria of Oroville, CA. Brother Bob and Bette of Grass Valley, brother George and Barbara of Longview, WA and numerous nieces and nephews.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents Mathias and Stella, brothers Alfred, Paul, Arnold and baby sister Agnes, daughter Joni in 2010, and brother-in-law John in 2001. Cremation took place in Roseville, CA on April 20, 2017 by the Trident Society Cremation Services.
There will be a full military Honor memorial for Leonard at Memorial Park in Grass Valley at 3:00 p.m. on June 25, 2017.
