Lloyd Joseph Chittock passed away peacefully at his home in Rough and Ready, Calif., on Sept. 5, 2013. He was 91.
A viewing will be at 10 a.m. with services starting at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 615 Hollow Way, Nevada City, Calif., with interment following at 1 p.m. at Rough and Ready Cemetery.
Lloyd was born on Jan. 30, 1922, in Gering, Neb., to Calvin and Ethel (Bridges) Chittock. He spent his early years in Arcadia, Neb., moving to Southern California when he was 13. He graduated from Santa Ana High School in 1939.
He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) after graduation and later worked for Consolidated Aircraft in San Diego, Calif. During this time, he met the love of his life, Wilda Marie Smith. They were married on Aug. 15, 1941, in Yuma, Ariz. They had eight beautiful children.
He changed direction in his career after marriage; first working for the family dairy, then moving to Gridley, Calif.. where he began hauling crops including hay and rice. In 1964, he purchased Ridge Feed and Supply in Grass Valley, Calif.
His love of animals, especially cattle, made this the perfect choice for him. He retired in 1987, selling the business to his son, Curt.
He was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in many leadership positions. His family was especially important to him. He enjoyed sports, in particular baseball and football. He rarely missed attending or listening to the Nevada Union High School football games. He was a very generous man and always found something good to laugh about.
He is survived by his sister, Mildred Waddel of Yakima, Wash.; stepsister Betty Williams of Santa Rosa, Calif.; daughters Cassandra Quist of Gridley, Calif., Daphne Gammell (Lynn) of Carson City, Nev., Dyana Strange (Jack) of Citrus heights, Calif., Tassoula Pitt (Kim) of Yuba City, Calif., Melissa Trauner (Tom Condon) of Portland, Ore., and Melinda Downs (David) of Sparks, Nev.; sons Lloyd Curtis "Curt" Chittock (Debra) of Rough and Ready, Charles "Chuck" Chittock (Teri) of Grass Valley; 36 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Wilda; his sister, Blanche Hunkins; and great-great-granddaughter Avalee Stewart.
Arrangements are in the care of Hooper & Weaver Mortuary.
