LaFayette "Pat" Jones died peacefully at home in Nevada City Dec. 2, 2012. He was 88. He is survived by Dee Jones, his wife of 68 years.
Pat was born Feb. 14, 1924 (always a sweetheart), in Palestine, Ark., and grew up in Colfax, La. He joined the Navy in 1942 and enjoyed his 27-year career as a hospital corpsman, during which he served in three wars in the Pacific Fleet in WWII, later on the battleship USS Iowa and on the minesweeper USS Mockingbird in the Korean conflict. His best set of orders was a three-year tour on the French Riviera, accompanied by his family. He retired in 1969 as a senior chief petty officer.
After retirement, he and his wife, Dee, served as fire lookouts at Peg Leg Mountain in the Lassen National Forest for 16 years. Pat and Dee moved to Nevada City and built a home in 1974. Here, he enjoyed golf, square dancing, gardening and travel. An accomplished but modest golfer, he rarely mentioned his six(!) holes-in-one. He was a quiet hero who cherished those dear to him. He will be greatly missed and always treasured for his wisdom, integrity and devotion to his family. He didn't speak about his values — he lived them, guiding by example.
He is survived by his wife, Dee, of Nevada City; son Stephen "Casey" Jones of Vallejo; daughter Jill Kelly (Marc) of Nevada City; grandchildren Kachina Kelly-Page (Phil) of San Francisco; Rainy Dyer (Greg) of Albuquerque, N.M.; Dr. Dagon Jones (Erica) of Davis; great-grandchildren Kiah, Anthony Brendan, Gwenna and Caden; sister Judy Hicks of Colfax, La.
The family will host a reception at a later date.
