John Wm. Crabtree died on Sept. 5, 2013. He was 75.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. on Sat., Oct. 12, at the Veterans Hall on South Auburn Street in Grass Valley.
John was born on Sept. 20, 1938, in French Camp, Calif., to Arthur Crabtree and Alice Jacobs. He graduated from San Lorenzo High School in San Lorenzo, Calif.
Discharged from the U.S. Army in September of 1965, he began a flooring and drapery business. He became involved with his children’s school activities. His love of 4-H kept him busy for 17 years, being a leader and community leader. The 4-H members fondly called him “Mr. Sunshine.”
He moved to Grass Valley in the late ‘80s with the idea of being here one year, but loving the area so much, he ended up custom-building his own home.
He became involved with the American Legion, being an active member for 24 years as a commander and a finance officer. He volunteered for Music in the Mountains and The Foothill Theatre Co.
John loved gardening, when becoming a master gardener, he began to raise orchids. Being told that orchids would not grow in Nev. Co., he built a greenhouse. For 20 years, the flowers continue to bloom. Good job, John! His second love was music — playing the guitar, flute and saxophone.
John is survived by his wife of 52 years, Darlene; daughters Kristine and Wendy; and brother, Richard..
He is preceded in death by his son, Robert; mother, Alice; and his beloved dog, Mandy.
We miss and love you! Say hello to the family for us.
