Gordon Lee Mierau
April 5, 2013
Gordon Lee Mierau, 81, of Grass Valley died at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Thursday March 21st following a two month illness.
He was born to the late Frank and Rose Mierau in Henderson, Nebraska on August 28, 1949. He graduated from Chaffey High School in Upland, California in 1949. Gordon enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was stationed with the 86th Air Base Group in Bremerhaven, Germany.
Gordon spent his life after the Air Force working as a carpenter's assistant. Eventually, he began his work in the poultry business. This is what brought him to Grass Valley. In 1967, Gordon moved his wife and two year old daughter to Grass Valley. He bought and ran a poultry business on Bitney Springs Road.
Gordon was a founding member of the Sierra United Presbyterian Church in Nevada City. He was part of the group that started the Church's yard sale. This idea was a gigantic success. The church has been having them for thirty two years.
In his later years, Gordon spent his best time with his young and energetic granddaughter Faith. He would prop her on a footstool near the stove. Together, they would concoct various dishes only a grandfather and his toddler granddaughter could come up with. Their favorite meals though were ham sandwiches cooked on an iron skillet along with ice cream and strawberry Kiwi Snapple.
Gordon had a surprising memory for American History. This made for good Wednesday conversations drinking coffee and reading the newspaper. He made a habit of watching the Sierra College history class on television. These conversations will be missed. Gordon is survived by his daughter Debra Miller of Grass Valley. He is also survived by his sister Joan "Jody" Crawford of Fresno along with her children Mark, Terry, and Gail Crawford.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 March, 28 at Dixon Veteran's Cemetery 5810 Midway Road Dixon, California.
