Cyril Hughes, a resident of Grass Valley since 1979, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, with his extended family close by. He was 95 and found a way to be present for his 74th anniversary with his true love and life companion, wife, Ina, two days prior to his death.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at the Chapel of the Angels, 250 Race St. in Grass Valley. Viewing will be at 9 a.m. After the service, a burial will be at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, 5810 Midway Road, at 2:30 p.m. Please plan to arrive by 2 p.m.
He was born Feb. 2, 1918, in San Antonio, Texas, raised in central Mississippi and married his soul mate in 1939. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942, serving his country during and after WW II. He later joined the U.S. Coast Guard and proudly served for another 15 years in the aviation division, reaching the rate of chief petty officer. He retired in 1962 from the military and then worked in the electronics field in the Bay Area for several years. He and Ina later relocated to Grass Valley, where he enjoyed the slower paced, small-town life in the California foothills.
Cy and Ina raised their four daughters with much love and wisdom and welcomed sons-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren into their ever-expanding family. They were longtime members of the Grass Valley United Methodist Church. Cy never met a stranger in his life and could strike up a conversation with anyone. He loved to talk about his years in the military and anything having to do with motorcycles and cars (especially his beloved Delta ’88). He relished telling funny stories — laughing uncontrollably at himself before ever getting to the punch line. He adored animals, especially their series of family Boston terriers. He was a loving husband, devoted father, caring brother and great friend. We all are so very thankful we had a chance to know and love him. His presence enhanced all of our lives immeasurably.
Cy is survived by his wife, Ina; daughters Diane, Karen (Jerry), Sharen (Rod) and Wanda (Barry); grandchildren Patrick, Gailyn, Kerri, Ry, Zac, Kelsey, Layne, Travis, Rachel and Chad; great-grandchildren Aaron, Katie, Estee, Pilar, Hannah, Delilah, Fiona, Ella and soon to be born Clara; and great-great grandchildren Chancellor, Aleksandr and Knick.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Foothills, Sammie’s Friends Animal Shelter or the charity of your choosing.
