A 50-year resident of Grass Valley, Carol Phillips passed away the morning of Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital. She was 72.
A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, at the Grass Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church, 12889 Osborne Hill Road, Grass Valley, CA 95945.
Carol was born Dec. 25, 1939. After completing her nursing studies at Pacific Union College and Glendale Adventist Hospital, Carol married Ralph Phillips and moved to Grass Valley in 1962. Spending her 47-year career at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, Carol attentively cared for three generations of new mothers and their children in the OB and Nursery Department. After a life spent serving others, Carol endured a two-year battle with ovarian cancer, never losing her sense of humor or her positive outlook on life. She always had a smile and a kind word for everyone who crossed her path. An artisan at heart, Carol always had her hands busy on at least half-a-dozen projects, ranging from spinning and knitting to weaving to sewing and quilting. Devoted to her community, she often led efforts to put handmade goods in the hands of those in need. Carol was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who always put her family first. She will be sorely missed.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph, her two sons, Mark and Scott, and her five grandchildren Olaf, Nickolas, Maja, Nathan and Drew.
Carol was preceded in death by her son, Richard, and her brother, Bruce Pence Sr.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper & Weaver Mortuary.
