Barbara Jane Bennette passed away Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012. She was 89 years old.
A Memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 235 South Church St., Grass Valley, Calif. There will be a reception with food following the service.
Barbara was born in San Francisco Nov. 13, 1923, but grew up on a 500-acre ranch in Placerville, Calif. She has lived in Nevada City, Calif., for 50 years. She was a tennis champion at Eldorado High School in Placerville, Calif. Her hobbies included riding horses, golf, gardening and playing cards. She obtained her pilot's license in 1949. She was also a member of Nevada County Country Club. Barbara paved the way as a model woman for most of her life as a public servant. Besides being a mother to five boys and a wife to Robert S. Bennette for 60 years, she also served our country in the Navy Sea Bee's from 1944 until 1946. Then, when World War II was over and the Navy no longer needed her service, she volunteered to work in a supply depot in Okinawa, Japan, which included taking charge of several POWs. She married Bob Bennette (deceased) Nov. 4, 1949. They moved to Nevada City in 1963. Shortly after her arrival in Nevada County, she began serving the community as a secretary for Nevada County and worked her way up to become the first female county superintendent of buildings and grounds, serving us as a public servant for 20 years. She also served Grass Valley as the charter president of the Lady Lioness in 1985 and later as a member of Grass Valley Lions Club. Even at age 85, she answered the call to serve our county as a member of the Nevada County Grand Jury from 2009-10, chairing the Audit and Finance Committee.
She is survived by her sons, Bob, Steve and Don; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Barbara is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Bennette, and sons Douglas and Charles.
