Peter Kinney

Peter Kinney passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, after a long, well fought battle with cancer. He was 61.

Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. on Sat., Jan. 4, 2014, at the Grass Valley United Methodist Church.

Pete was born on July 25, 1952, to Bill and Shirley Kinney in Fontana, Calif. Being born to an engineering project management family meant that Pete moved many times in his childhood, including to various locations in the Bay Area and Chicago. Pete graduated from high school from Culver Military Academy and then went to the University of Arizona, receiving his degree in mining engineering.

Similar to his childhood, Pete spent much of his early adulthood traveling for work as a construction project manager, including quite a bit of time working in Saudi Arabia and Libya. During that time he was blessed with his two older daughters, Vanessa and Erika.

Pete later returned to work in the states, where he met his current wife, Kathy, in Grass Valley, and was married on Dec. 29, 1992. During the next few years, their two daughters were born — Haley and Toria.

Pete changed the emphasis of his work soon after this time and received his P.E. in safety engineering. After working for several companies, he has sent the past six years working for Parsons Brinkerhoff Construction as a safety manager.

Even after his initial cancer diagnosis six years ago, Peter choose to take up running and participated in many local and regional races, as well as hiking Mount Lassen last year. For the past 20 years, Pete has been an avid supporter of local swim and water polo teams.

Pete is survived by his wife of almost 23 years, Kathy; daughters Toria Kinney of Penn Valley, Haley Kinney of Penn Valley, Erika and Nathan Revera of Concord and Vanessa and Matt Pelletier of Benicia; mother, Shirley Kinney of San Diego; sisters Kathi and Don Rose of San Diego and Donna and Tony Brock of Grass Valley; brother, Mike and Marjorie Kinney of Perth, Australia; grandchildren Nathanael Jr., Matthew Jr. and Maya, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Pete was preceded in death by his father, William H. Kinney.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Interfaith Food Ministry, the American Cancer Association or the charity of your choosing.
