Gertrude “Trudy” May Seward Rong passed away on Nov. 29, 2013, at home surrounded by her family. She was 87.
A memorial will be held at 1:30 p.m., Dec. 28, 2013, at the Colfax Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 454 Scholtz Ave. in Colfax.
Trudy was born May 23 1926, in Solomon, Kan., to Emery and Elsie Seward. Early in childhood, Trudy showed a caring and nurturing spirit. She helped her parents care for her five sisters, even though she was almost the youngest.
After Trudy graduated from Enterprise Academy, she taught at a church school in Marceline, Mo., for three years. She then attended Pacific Union College and Sonoma State University and earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in elementary education.
In the winter of 1953, Trudy married Orval Eugene Rong at the local Adventist Church. Together they had four children, Carol Lynne, James Lee, Nancy Ann and Janet Kay, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Throughout her professional career, Trudy excelled in motivating her students, inspiring her colleagues and nurturing a love for learning. She taught for 22 years at Dunbar Elementary School in Sonoma, Calif., where she also served as vice principal. Over more than 28 years of teaching, Trudy showed each child love and encouragement and always believed in their success.
Upon her retirement in 1988, Orval and Trudy built their home in Grass Valley, Calif. She enjoyed many activities, such as sewing (she had a special sewing room), scrapbooking, crafts, gardening and studying her Bible. She was a Sabbath school teacher at her church.
Trudy was an educator; a wife; a mother; a grandmother; and most importantly, a child of God. She loved her family fiercely and prayed for them without ceasing. Mitzpah Trudy, and in the blink of an eye you will wake to see Jesus and be reunited with all those who love you dearly.
