Richard Halstead

Richard “Doc” Halstead passed suddenly in his beloved Penn Valley of a massive heart attack.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 6 at Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.

Doc was born August 5, 1946, at the old Community Hospital in Grass Valley to George and Charlotte Halstead of Nevada City. He was one of a set of twins born that day to George and Charlotte.

He was with his friends at a Penn Valley restaurant at the time of his death. Doc cherished his family and friends and loved to spend as much time as he could with them.

He was a Navy veteran who served two tours of duty in Vietnam as a combat Navy Corpsman. He was awarded two purple hearts during those two tours.

He was very proud of his service to his country and was intensely loyal to both the United States Navy and the United State Marine Corps.

He managed the stables at Tahoe Donner Equestrian Center for ten years. After Tahoe Donner, he toured for many years with many recording artists as an employee of Winterland Productions. Most recently, he worked as a realtor with Gateway Realty. Doc was a founding member and past president of the Penn Valley Community Rodeo Association.

Doc was absolutely larger than life. He lived life to its fullest but never left any of his friends or family in need. He will be sorely missed by all that knew him and loved him.

His life on this earth was too short and many of us are feeling the pain of his passing greatly.

Doc is survived by his sister, Kathryn Starsman (Peter) of San Diego; brothers George (Eleanor) of Rocklin, Jerry (Linda) of Rocklin and John of Pasadena. Doc also leaves nieces and nephews Greg Halstead (Denise) of Rocklin, Jennifer Hancock (Steve) of Lincoln, Emily Sawin (Scott) of Roseville, Cattie Luedloff (Chris) of Roseville and Rebecca Halstead of Roseville.

He also loved and cherished his grandnieces and grandnephews Austin, Lucas and Sydney Hancock of Lincoln, Reagan, Julia, Grant and Bradley Halstead of Rocklin, Kaitlyn and Courtney Sawin of Roseville and CJ Luedloff of Roseville.

He also loved and was loved by his coworkers at Gateway Realty, his many friends at the Penn Valley Community Rodeo Association and the Penn Valley Chamber.
