Emily (Millie) Clark, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully in her home Monday, Nov. 11, 2013. She was 92.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 235 S. Church St., Grass Valley.
She was born in Leadville, Colo., Jan. 27, 1921, to Louis and Frances Purkat. She moved to Grass Valley in 1937 and attended Grass Valley High School in her senior year. She met the love of her life, Jack Melvin Clark, in 1940 on the dance floor at the Knotty Poppy in Grass Valley while she was working at the Pacific Bell Telephone & Telegraph Company as an operator. They were married one week before Pearl Harbor in 1941, and she has been his steadfast companion ever since. Nov. 30 would have been their 72nd wedding anniversary.
She gave several years’ service to the community through her involvement with the March of Dimes, the Election Board, the Grass Valley Volunteer Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary, American Legion Post 130 Auxiliary and as chairwoman of the American Legion Juniors. Her participation at Emmanuel Episcopal Church included the offices of St. Catherine’s Guild and its activities, serving as chairwoman of the Funeral Reception Committee and devoting her talents to the Fellowship Committee.
For her children, Millie and Sue, she became involved as classroom mother and assistant Girl Scout Leader. She made sure they had every opportunity to enjoy life through dance and music lessons and innumerable activities. She was a loving grandmother who spent quality time participating in the lives of grandchildren Elisa and Ryan. For 20 years, she worked behind the scenes on the Girl Scout July 4th award-winning floats, and she was knighted at a NUHS Choir Madrigal Dinner for her 15 years work with costumes.
Through the years, she enjoyed ballroom and square dancing with her husband, spending time with family and friends, sewing, camping, fishing, traveling and gardening, giving special attention to her gorgeous roses. Her devotion to her husband, children and grandchildren and her unwavering dedication to her friends, assured that hers was the home multiple generations were drawn to. She was loved and respected by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, Jack Melvin Clark; daughters Millie Beatie and Sue Clark; grandson Ryan Beatie (Erin); granddaughter Elisa Taylor (Richard); great-grandson Samuel Taylor; nephews John Shannonhouse, Clint and John Scovel and David Clark; niece Wendy Clark Szura; and their families; great-granddaughter Randi Cope (Matthew); great-great-granddaughter Maryluise; great-granddaughter Daniele Yantos (Mark); and great-grandson, Charlie Taylor.
She is preceded in death by her parents and sisters infant Mary Purkat, Georgie Purkat Shannonhouse and Marlene Thompson Scovel.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Emmanuel Episcopal Church in her name. Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper & Weaver Mortuary.
