Ruth Elizabeth Hamm passed away on Nov. 3, 2013, in Nevada City. She was 96.

Ruthe was born Aug. 22, 1917, to Swedish immigrants in Rockford, Ill. She was raised in Hollywood, Calif., where she met and married James Hamm in 1937. With Jim, she developed and operated hotels and charter yachts from San Francisco to the Virgin Islands.
She was a member of the Nevada City Women’s Club, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, a founding member and major benefactor of the American Victorian Museum and ML Marsh House Foundation.
She enjoyed travelling with her grandchildren, civic activities, reading and prolific waterpainting, which she took up at 90 years old and continued until Halloween cards were finished.
She made Belvedere her home in 1954, where her children attended local schools, then continued to keep a second home there until her passing.
She leaves her daughter, Carol Fluke (David) and grandchildren, Christopher Fluke, Katherine Fluke, Elizabeth Kerslake (Patrick) and William Fluke.
Ruthe is preceded in death by her husband, Jim Hamm and daughter, Trudy Reid.
She had a heart of gold and a smile for every person she met in her long and happy life.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the Belvedere Tiburon Historical Landmarks Society or Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.
