Our beloved Jewel Gertrude Johnson of Grass Valley, Calif., passed away under care at Hospice of the Foothills Sept. 11, 2013. She was 89.
There was a service on Sept. 14, 2013.
Jewel was born in Pocatello, Idaho, on Jan. 28, 1924, to Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Hawkley. Jewel was the youngest of many children. She graduated from Pocatello High School and married Marvin Johnson on Sept. 18, 1942. It was war time and Marvin enlisted in the Air Force. They were stationed in Hobbs, N.M.
When the war ended, Jewel and Marvin relocated to San Francisco where Marvin started a new business, and in 1955 they moved to Los Altos, Calif. In Los Altos, Jewel contributed over 10,000 hours of volunteer work at El Camino Hospital, including years as a buyer for the gift shop and as president of the Hospital Auxiliary. In 2003 they retired to Grass Valley.
Jewel is survived by Gary Johnson’s son, Terry, Loni and great-granddaughter Riley; son, Tim, and great-grandsons Wyatt and Garrett; daughter, Erika; daughter, Genna; Brian Roehrich, great-granddaughter Madison and Debbie Hill, his longtime companion; Sharon, the mother of Gary’s children; son, Dale Johnson, Margaret and grandchildren Erin and Daniel; daughter, Judy Giessler, Dan and grandson Eric; Erica and great-grandchildren Jake and Maren; son, Joe Johnson, Kristy and grandchildren Lauren, Graham and Hanna.
She is predeceased by her husband, Marvin, and eldest son, Gary.
We say goodbye to her now. We will be forever grateful to this wonderful woman who filled our lives with love and hope. Thank you, Jewel. Your family and friends will forever keep you in their hearts.
