Avery Blake Jr. made his transition on Sept. 19, 2013, in the loving embrace of his family.

A celebration of his life will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 5, 2013, at the home of Chris Owen’s ‘TerraSol’, 13620 Bodie Ridge Road, Nevada City. Take Cement Hill Road off of Hwy. 49, all the way to the end. Turn right on Bodie Ridge Road and follow signs.

Avery began his life journey in Baltimore, Md., born to Avery Sr. and Mabel Blake. Avery attended Swarthmore College where he was an All-American lacrosse player. After graduating with an engineering degree, he served in the U.S. Navy.

Avery went on to become one of the great lacrosse players in American history. He was inducted into the Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1979, joining his father who was an outstanding player and coach. Forever dedicated to the game he loved, Avery was a driving force in popularizing lacrosse in Nevada County, Calif.

In addition to lacrosse, he loved boating, world travel and watercolor painting. Avery was a pioneer in the computer industry in the Silicon Valley working with many startup companies with his sales and marketing expertise. He was a gentle giant who loved to work with his hands and spin a tale with his colorful wit, learning many lessons along the way and was an inspiration to us all.

A former commodore of the Northern California Classic Yacht Association, Avery’s calm and determined work ethic inspired everyone he touched. But it was his amazing love affair with his wife, Judy, for which his closest friends will remember him.

Avery is survived by his wife, Judy; sister Pat Sutton and children, Kim and Steve; sons from his marriage to Marge Blake-Myers, Brad and his wife, Leslie and their two daughters, Brittany and Hayley, youngest son, Geoffrey and his wife, Marcia and their sons, Xander and Dashiell; stepsons Stephen DeHart and his daughter, Sammy, and Greg DeHart and his wife, Kimm and their daughter, Lexi.
