Sunday, July 28, 2013 marked the passing of Lorraine
Harris Carl, our beloved mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother
who lived her life in the spirit and character
of her Grass Valley pioneer ancestors. Lorraine’s maternal
grandparents established the Woods’ Ranch which is now
the site of Lyman Gilmore School. Her paternal grandfather,
W.D. Harris, was for many years the City Clerk of
Grass Valley, owner of Harris and Sons on Main St., and a
founding member of the Grass Valley Cornish Choir.
Born September 29, 1919 at home in Grass Valley,
Calif. to Angelo and Cora Woods Harris, she lived almost
her entire 93 years happily in the same neighborhood near
Bell Hill School.
Lorraine grew up in an era when her neighborhood
after school baseball games were routinely joined by miners
returning home from their morning shifts. She expressed
great pride in her fielding abilities as a shortstop in the local
woman’s softball league.
Lorraine was a hairdresser at Broadway Beauty in
Nevada City during the 1940s. She married Norman Carl
in Grass Valley on May 19, 1945 and devoted herself to the
care and nurturing of her two children and elderly family
members. She was a life member of the Aurora Chapter
Order of the Eastern Star and a 50 year member of Native
Daughters of the Golden West.
She is predeceased by her parents, Angelo and Cora
Woods Harris; brothers, Charles and Lorin “Bro” Harris
and her husband, Norman Carl.
Her memory is retained in the hearts of her family;
son, Frank Carl and wife Barbara of Bend, Oregon;
daughter, Helen Martini and husband Jerry of Grass Valley;
granddaughters, Caryn Charpier and husband John Lawrence
of Seattle, Washington, Danielle Walsh and husband
Richard of Berkley, Calif., Celeste Koval and husband Tim
of Las Vegas, Nevada; grandson, Evan Martini of Grass
Valley; great grandchildren, Audrey, Alexis and Isaac Koval,
Vivienne and Nicolas Lawrence and Ezra Walsh.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Monday,
August 12 at Greenwood Cemetery in Grass Valley. In
lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice.
