William Tackmier

William John “Bill” Tackmier passed away on July 16, 2013, in Redding, Calif. He was 93.

He will be remembered fondly by his family at a celebration of life gathering in the fall.

Bill was born Nov. 6, 1919, in Butte, Mont., to Loretta (Pellar) and John Frederick Tackmier.

In his early teens, he moved to Taft, Calif., where he graduated from high school and attended Taft Community College. He met Dorothy Rose Nixon in Taft and they later married May 3, 1942 in Reno, Nev.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served in World War II as a pilot where he flew B-17’s and completed 25 missions in Europe. Following the war, he worked for PG&E as a general foreman in the Electrical Department in Vallejo, Calif. He retired in 1982 after 32 years with the company.

Upon retirement, he and Dorothy moved to Nevada City. A year after Dorothy passed away in 1989, he married his second wife, Mary Richards, and they became members of the First Baptist Church in Nevada City.

Mary passed away in 2007 and he remained in Nevada City until he moved to Redding, Calif., in late 2012 to be closer to his family.

Bill’s first priority was always family. He generously gave his time and energy to major projects, such as building a house or providing financial assistance. He was a creative woodworker and all-around handyman. Bill also valued his time spent with a men’s Bible study group.

He loved traveling and visiting out-of-state family members in Oregon and Montana. He also enjoyed watching televised games of the San Francisco Giants baseball team and the Sacramento Kings basketball team.

Bill leaves behind two sons Robert John Tackmier (Kristen) of Sisters, Ore., and Lynn Edward Tackmier (Linda) of Cottonwood, Calif., four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He also is survived by sisters Marion Brechbill of Seeley Lake, Mont., and Shirlene Butler of Lincoln City, Ore.
