Kathy Holbrook

After a long, valiant fight, Kathy Holbrook succumbed to complications from Parkinson’s Disease on June 14, 2013. It was Kathy’s greatest wish to be able to be at home, and her husband, Mike, made that possible.

An open house celebration of life will be Thursday, July 25, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the family’s home. All friends are welcome to stop by.

Kathy was born in Rawtenstall, Lancaster, England, on Dec. 21, 1925. It was there she spent her youth and young adulthood. In 1944, Kathy joined The Royal Navy and served the W.R.N.S until 1947.

In 1959, Kathy immigrated to California to work as a nanny. Shortly after arriving, she met and married (Myron) Mike Holbrook, who at the time was in the U.S. Navy. During their early years of marriage, they had a son, Paul Holbrook. Soon after Paul’s birth, Mike got orders to report to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Just shy of their two-year tour, Kathy and Paul were evacuated due to the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Holbrooks lived in naval stations in Phoenix, Japan and Alameda. Mike retired from the Navy in 1973 and moved to Pleasanton, where Kathy had many friends and happy memories. Kathy belonged to The Daughters of The British Empire while in Pleasanton. After moving to Grass Valley in 1994, she got involved with the Cuppa Club. Kathy rarely missed the once-a-month luncheons and always enjoyed these get-togethers.

Kathy absolutely loved to travel. They went to Canada, England and New Zealand along with many national park visits to their grandchildren.

Kathy is survived by her husband of 53 years, (Myron) Mike; son, Paul Holbrook of Atlanta; grandsons Brian and Matthew; granddaughter, Katie; sister-in-law, Dorothy Shepherd of England; niece, Ruth Ann Shepherd of Scotland; and great-nephew, John-Gerard Shepherd of Scotland.

Kathy was predeceased by her parents, William and Amy Shepherd; and her brother, Kenneth Shepherd.
