Robert (Bob) Preston Stover passed peacefully from this life to his eternal home in heaven the morning of May 13, 2013, after a gradual decline in health. He was 96. He was surrounded and supported by his loving family and caregivers during the last days of his life.
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m., Thurs., May 30, at Twin Cities Church, 11726 Rough & Ready Hwy., in Grass Valley. Interment will be at 10:30 a.m. sharp (it’s the military) Friday, May 31, at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, in Dixon, Calif. 95620.
He was born in Huntington Park, Calif., on Aug. 4, 1916, but had lived in Grass Valley with his son David and family since 1983.
Bob served in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945. He flew six missions on the B-24 Cover Girl as a flight engineer. He was blessed to not be on the seventh mission, which was shot down over Europe. Bob left the European campaign to train on the B-29 to bomb Japan. Our atomic bombing of Japan ended the war right before his B-29 squadron was about to deploy.
Bob worked as a mailman for the U.S. Postal Service until retirement at age 55. He then started his second career as a “gofer” for his contractor son, David. He made many friends on his gofer runs to Grass Valley for building supplies. Bob was such an outgoing, friendly man that on more than one occasion, he returned to the job site without the supplies he set out for because he got so involved in chatting with everyone he saw! Bob played tennis as a young man, and in his later years excelled at playing the Lotto. Every week he got all the numbers but not on the same line. Bob was also a sports enthusiast and loved watching football, baseball, basketball and tennis on TV. He spent many hours watching sports with his son, David.
Bob committed his life to Jesus Christ at the Bible study led by Norm Poss at Mountain View Care Home where Bob lived the last year and a half of his life.
Bob is survived by his three children, Robert Stover Jr. of Tujunga, Calif.; David Stover (Teri) of Grass Valley, Calif.; Debbie Stover of Tujunga, Calif.; former wife, Edith H. Stover, of Tujunga, Calif.; six grandchildren Robert P. Stover III, Mike Stover, Shelly Stover, Brian Stover, Kelly Stover Higelin and Sam Stover; eight great-grandchildren Jace, Justine and Jacob Stover, James and Grace Stover, Skylah and Micah Higelin and James Preston Stover.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh L. Stover and Alice H. Smith Stover, and all of his siblings.
Arrangements are being handled by Hooper and Weaver Mortuary. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Twin Cities Church, Courtyard Fund, 11726 Rough & Ready Hwy., Grass Valley, CA 95945.
