Shirley Dean Forssman of Grass Valley passed away at home with her son on May 3, 2013. She was 90.
Shirley was born April 6, 1923, in Denver, Colo., to Leslie and Vada Cowperthwaite. She graduated from high school in Grass Valley. At the age of 16, she sailed by ship with her parents to Africa where her father worked on copperbelt mines in Northern Rhodesia (Zambia).
She met and married her soulmate, Magnus Oscar (Dick) Forssman. After his death, she moved south to Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) with her two sons. She worked as a bookkeeper for Massey Ferguson Farming Equipment.
In 1988, she returned to Grass Valley to take care of her mother. She worked at FREED, Music in the Mountains and the Forestry Department.
Shirley enjoyed reading and shopping (QVC). She remained active and took pride in her appearance at all times and died a beautiful lady.
The family wishes to thank all the doctors and nurses, Judith Bell, Renee Amus and Hospice for taking care of her over the years.
She is survived by her sons Brian (Jen) Stilfunten of South Africa and Kevin of Grass Valley; grandchildren Scott, Kirsty and Ross (Marietta); great-grandchild Kevin; and nieces Melody of Zimbabwe, Carol of England and Anthony of South Africa.
She will be sadly missed by her cousins in Nevada and California, and also the many friends locally and around the world.
Following Shirley’s request, she wanted to be cremated at Hooper and Weaver with no service.
