Dan McDonald

Dan McDonald; A good man … gone. He passed away on Feb. 14, 2013 at his home in North San Juan, Calif. He was 62.

Memorial Services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013 at his home. There will also be an Honor Guard flag presentation at 2:00 p.m.

Dan was as a pillar of the community in North San Juan, He was a father, brother and friend.

Also known as Grasshopper (and sometimes Hopper), he was born Feb. 16, 1951, in Oakland, Calif., and was raised in El Cerrito, Calif. He was a self-sufficient lad, always having jobs so he could feed his enthusiasm for fun, which included motorcycles, friends and women (not sure which order).

He served an honorable tour of duty in the U.S. Marine Corps during Vietnam, and his role in the service was among his proudest accomplishments. After returning home, Dan married and had a son, Jake. in 1973. They moved to Nevada City in 1975 and settled there on a ranch. Dan worked as a horticulturist and as a single father.

He and Jake were well known as they would be seen shooting pool, riding on their tractor or riding horses. Dan was among the most active supporters of the local sports scene when his son was involved, and was known as one of the No. 1 fans in the stands by the local community.

Dan was well liked by many, and his house was a common stopping place for community members looking to come by for a good laugh or advice, help and encouragement. Dan was known for giving much more than he received — a trait that won him admiration by many. He was a big and strong man, whose physical presence was intimidating to many. However, it was the size of his heart that was truly the most impressive.

Dan is survived by son, Jake; daughter, Erica; mother, Janet; sisters, Ellen and Elizabeth; ex-wives, Ellen O’Meara and Mary Lowe.
