The Nevada Union boys alpine ski team secured first-place for the season in the CNISSF Central II Division after a strong showing in Monday’s slalom event at Boreal.
The girls team came in third to end the season, and with the combined team points the Miners earned second place overall, finishing behind Davis.
Olivia McDowell led the girls Monday with a ninth-place finish and a combined race time of 1:22.48. Julia Ramirez took 10th with a time of 1:24.48. Quinlan Grim crossed the finish in 12th-place at 1:25.53. Tori Newman brought in the final points for the girls with a 14th-place finish at 1:26.61.
As usual, the boys put the crowd on edge as they pushed the limit with their ferocious attack on the run.
Leading NU racer Peter McDowell missed a gate on his second run costing him a fourth place standing after run one and Robert Sekerak who was sitting in fifth had to hike and was still able to earn points with a 12th place finish at 1:22.83. Brother Michael Sekerak, feeling the weight increase on his shoulders, poured it on and finished in third with a 1:13.98.
At 1:18.66, Caspar Hendrickson snagged a sixth place while teammate Ethan Good, hot on his tail with a 1:19.39, finished seventh and pushed a Davis racer into eighth. Robert Andya, a first year racer who just joined the varsity ranks, earned points by shoving Colfax and Del Oro further down the pack with a 13th-place finish at 1:23.76.
The kids were awesome and coach Richard Atkins commented on the impressive attitudes and determination that the Miners displayed at Monday’s final division race.
“They wanted it,” Atkins said. “They trained for it, and we can all be proud of what these kids did today.”
With six boys and the three girls heading to the state championships March 5 at Shasta, The Miners stand a great chance to reach the podium. The boys team boasts great depth and the girls are heading into the championships knowing they have little room for error.
If they ski to their ability and stay upright NU is poised for a great showing this year.
