'Big mystery' surrounds North San Juan injury accident

A Nevada City woman sustained major head injuries in an early-morning accident being called a “big mystery” by the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP received a call of an injury accident on Highway 49 near North San Juan at about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, said Officer Dina Hernandez.

Officers responded and found a Nissan Pathfinder parked at a gas station south of Oak Tree Road.

Nevada County Sheriff’s dispatch reports indicate that a man called 911 to report a woman in pain, with moaning heard in the background.

He then called a second time and said he was asleep in the passenger seat and believed the vehicle had rolled, according to dispatch reports. He said he had driven the vehicle to the gas station.

Barbara J. Ryan, 48, was found in the passenger seat and had sustained major injuries, but there was no sign of damage to the vehicle, Hernandez said.

Ryan was transported by helicopter to Sutter Roseville Medical Center and is reportedly in critical condition.

Joel Theron Webb, 33, of Camptonville, was in the driver’s seat of the Pathfinder, Hernandez said. Webb had called 911 and was intoxicated, Hernandez said.

But it is not clear if he was an involved party in the collision, she said.

Hernandez called the situation a “big mystery” and said officers are investigating a number of different possibilities as to how Ryan sustained her injuries.

Anyone with information is urged to call the CHP office at 530-273-4415, she said.

Webb was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia and violating probation, and was being held in county jail in lieu of $76,250 bail.
