Martha Kilpela

Martha Taimi Kilpela passed away peacefully on Dec. 31, 2012, at Golden Empire Nursing home in Grass Valley, Calif. She was 99.

A private celebration of her rich, full life will be held at a later date. Her final resting will be alongside her mother at Grandview Cemetery, Monessen, Pa.

Martha was born on Oct. 17, 1913 in Monessen, PA., to Antti and Maria (Heikkinen) Kilpela. She attended school in Pa. She graduated California State Teachers College and earned a Masters Degree in Education from Canisius College in Buffalo NY., She loved teaching Algebra and English and dedicated her life to the profession for 35 years. Martha lived in Buffalo, NY for fifty years before moving to California in 2004. Martha began her love of travel in the 1940’s, covering the United States and later Europe, Russia, Australia, Asia, Canada, and the Caribbean. She enjoyed playing piano and bridge, and loved being with family. Her family and friends will always remember her as gracious, cheerful and loving “Aunt Martha”.

Martha is survived by nephews Edwin Kilpela (Joann) of Pittsburgh, PA and Eric Kilpela of Sherman Oaks, Calif; nieces, IIona Patterson of Mentor, OH and Marianna Hemings (Terri) of Grass Valley, Calif.; 9 great nephews and nieces and 14 great great nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Eino, Peter, Andy, Martin, Reino and George Kilpela, and nephew, Donald Kilpela.

Those wishing to honor Martha’s memory may make a donation to the charity of their choice.
