Howard Carlton Carlson passed away Dec. 19, 2012, from complications of the liver in Reno, Nev. He was 63 years young.
A memorial service will take place from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at the Love Building, 600 Minnie St., Grass Valley. All family and friends are welcome.
Howard was born July 31, 1949, to Kate and Howard Carlson in Waterbury, Conn. Howard graduated from Pierce College in New Hampshire with a B.A in journalism/creative writing in 1972. He came west with friends after graduation and started his firefighting career in the Los Padres NF as follows: 1973-1976 Los Prietos Hotshots, Los Padres NF; 1976-1980 San Marcos Helishots, Los Padres NF, 1980-1984 fire engine captain, Refugio Station, Los Padres NF (covering the Western Whitehouse under President Regan), 1984-1985 Los Padres NF assistant fire management officer, 1985-1986 Santa Barbara Ranger District, Los Padres NF, acting assistant forest public information officer, 1986-1989 Nevada City Ranger, Tahoe NF, district assistant FMO. He married Ann Carlson Jan. 16, 1990, in Carson City, Nev. He continued working, 1989-1993 Nevada City Ranger, Tahoe NF, and district fuels planning/implementation officer; 1993-1995 Nevada City Ranger, Tahoe NF, district FMO,1995-2000 Tahoe NF Zone FMO, 2000-2003 Tahoe NF assistant forest FMO, 2003-2006 Region 1 regional fire equipment specialist, incident commander, Sierra Front I.I.M.T., incident commander, Northern California I.I.M.T. No. 2, incident commander, Northern Rockies I.I.M.T. and incident commander, Katrina Response 2008.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Carlson; son Ryan Carlson; daughter Catherine Tess Carlson; sister Kris Carlson Well; niece Katie Well; nephews Stephen Scott Well.
