Marcia Lee Haley

Marcia Lee Haley

Marcia Lee Haley, of Nevada City, passed away on Sunday, December 2. She was 69, and had lived in Nevada City since she was two years old. Her parents were Charles Scott Haley, a mining engineer, and Jean Haley, a longtime first-grade teacher at Nevada City Elementary - whom Marcia, assisted in her classroom. She also volunteered for many years in the school’s library.

Marcia loved all sports, but particularly baseball - and took an especial interest in Nevada City’s Little League teams. In her youth (see the accompanying picture), she would attend all the games in Pioneer Park that she could, and became friends with many of the coaches and players. She followed Major league Baseball as well, and could quote statistics for any team and its batting and pitching stars. She never missed seeing the World Series on television, and when her beloved Giants took two World Championships in recent years, she was overjoyed.

For a long time, Marcia was a well-known figure in downtown Nevada City, where she would perambulate about, stopping in stores, restaurants and cafes, and making friends of the people who worked in each establishment. She was unfailingly cheerful and frequently helped out by performing odd jobs. Many residents of Nevada City also came to know her when she delivered their Union newspapers faithfully for more than a dozen years.

Throughout her life, Marcia attended Trinity Church in Nevada City, and was the church’s longest-serving acolyte. She saw her Church grow and change through the careers of six different rectors, who came to count upon her dependability, and she made friends of all who worshipped there.

Preceded in death by her parents and by an older sister, Kathleen, Marcia is survived by her siblings David, Janet, Allan and Brian Haley, and by numerous nieces, nephews and their offspring.

A memorial service will take place at Trinity Church, on Nevada Street in Nevada City, beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 10. Instead of flowers, Marcia’s family asks that donations be made in her name either to Trinity Church, or to Nevada City Little League.
