Jon Borad of Nevada City, Calif., passed away Nov. 14, 2012, in Auburn, Calif. He was 74.
A memorial service and celebration of his life will take place at 1 p. m. Dec. 3, 2012, at The Empire Mine State Historic Park, 10791 E. Empire St., Grass Valley, Calif. Friends and family are welcome to come and join us in remembering Jon.
Jon was born in Chicago April 16, 1938, to Martin B. Borad and Lucile Sharp Borad. He moved to Southern California with his parents when he was 5. He graduated from Santa Barbara High School in 1956 and earned his BA and MA from San Jose State College. He was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. He met his future wife Cheryl while they were in college, and they were married in 1963. Jon taught industrial arts at San Leandro High School and resided in Castro Valley for 35 years. When he retired in 1997, he and his wife, Cheryl, moved to Nevada City, where the family had spent vacations and holidays for more than 30 years.
Jon was a loved and respected docent at Empire Mine State Historical Park. He volunteered at the park’s blacksmith shop and taught new docents the art of blacksmithing. He was a member of Welcome Club of the Gold Country, EMPA and the California Blacksmith Association.
Jon is survived by his wife, Cheryl; daughters Lesley Belcher and Jennifer Weir; sons-in-law Steve Belcher and Paul Weir; granddaughter Abigail Weir; grandson Austin Belcher; and granddaughter Jessica Belcher. He is also survived by his brother, Bruce Borad; his sister, Elizabeth Borad Goode; brother-in-law Gary Vanier; and many nephews and nieces.
