Co-op supports Proposition 37

Along with the local farmers interviewed for your recent article, hundreds of owners, shoppers, and staff at BriarPatch Co-op Market support Prop 37, the Right to Know about GMOs initiative.

We have the right to know what’s in the food we’re eating and feeding to our families — we deserve an informed choice. Genetically engineered foods have not been adequately tested; it’s unethical to be putting an experimental technology into the food we feed our families.

Nearly 50 countries around the world require labels on GMOs, and many of these also have severe restrictions or bans against GMO food production or sale. We deserve the same level of protection and information as citizens in other nations. The opposition to Prop 37 is well-funded, thanks to Monsanto and other corporations (a list is available at cornucopia.org). It’s important to distinguish that their opposition is based on narrow business interests — these are not public interest groups acting on our behalf.

BriarPatch Co-op’s board of directors, management, and owners support our right to know, and hope you’ll join us in voting Yes on Prop 37.
