In loving memory of Leonard Paul Valdez, beloved father, grandfather and friend, who passed away Sept. 11, 2012.
Mass will be held for Len Saturday, Oct. 13, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Canice Catholic Church in Nevada City, followed by a gathering at his home. Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper & Weaver Mortuary.
Born Sept. 2, 1920, in Grass Valley to Louis Manuel and Margaret Nugent Valdez. Len attended schools in Grass Valley, graduating from Grass Valley High School in 1938. In 1940, Len married his beloved sweetheart, Mary Evelyn Valdez, and had 62 years together prior to her passing. In 1944, he served in the United States Navy, receiving an honorable discharge March 13, 1945, as a water tender, third class, on the USS President Jackson in the Asiatic-Pacific American Area. While still in high school, Len went to work at the mines in Grass Valley. After his stint in the Navy, he went to work at George Brother’s Foundry in Grass Valley as a molder and later as a grader operator at Cal Ida Lumber in Auburn, retiring from there. He served as past Fire Department Chief of Nevada City in 1965. His hobbies included gardening and square dancing at Rough & Ready Square Dancers.
He is survived by his daughters Jean (Dale) Hafelfinger of Grass Valley, Joan Laumann of Auburn, Judy (Curtis) Giles of Kennewick, Wash.; son James (Ramona) Valdez of Nevada City; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary Evelyn Valdez in 2003; grandson Jimmy Valdez in 2010; daughter-in-law Dale Valdez in 2003; and son-in-law Mike Laumann in 2008.
Dad, grandpa, even though you’re no longer here with us, you’ll forever be in our hearts, and now you’re where you’ve wanted to be with mom, grandma. May you rest in peace.
