Reading celebrates book about the impact of libraries
Friday at 7 p.m., the community room at the Madelyn Helling Library in Nevada City will be teeming with authors who wrote material for the book, "Open to All: What the Library Means to Me." Several of the authors will read; many more will be present - and all will be happy to autograph your copy of the book. Molly Fisk and Steve Sanfield are hosting this community event.
Friends of Nevada County Libraries is providing refreshments, and the proceeds from the book's sales will help buy more books for libraries in the county. Call 265-1407 for more information.
'Woman of power' to teach about prosperity
One of the 10 most powerful and inspirational women in the world, Dr. Terry Cole-Whitaker, is coming to town Sunday, Oct. 28, to give a service and workshop at Unity in the Gold Country.
So named by Laurel King in her best-selling book, "10 Women of Power," Cole-Whitaker is internationally known as the author of five books (the latest being "Dare to Be Great"), the producer of an Emmy winning television ministry program and the founder of Adventures in Enlightenment. She holds three honorary doctorate degrees for her humanitarian work and contributions to society. You've probably seen her being interviewed on television, too.
The title of her service lesson at 10:30 a.m. is "Instant Good Fortune." Her three-hour workshop, starting at 12:30 p.m., is titled "Eight Steps to Spiritual and Material Prosperity." It costs $20.
Says Cole-Whitaker, "My philosophy is quite simple - you can do it !
"In order to move forward in life, you have to say goodbye to old assumptions about yourself and be willing to say hello to a newer, happier you." In the three-hour workshop, she will show how to do that.
The church is located at 500 Crown Point Circle, #100 (off Whispering Pines), Grass Valley. Call 274-2463 for information.
Activist author takes on corporate
Sharon Delgado walks her talk. An ordained United Methodist minister who lives in Nevada City, she is the founder of Earth Justice Ministries and a longtime activist for the environment.
"Shaking the Gates of Hell: Faith-Led Resistance to Corporate Globalization," her first book, is an eye-opening look at spiritually motivated action against globalization. The basic premise is that global economic integration undermines spiritual and cultural values, threatens local economies, tramples on human rights and precipitates environmental decline. Her proposal is that there is a role for people of faith to play in combating this corporate-led path of problems.
Delgado will talk about her book on Saturday, Oct. 27, 3 p.m., at The Book Seller, 107 Mill St., Grass Valley; 272-2131.
