Jo Ann Bell passed away on July 10, 2014 in Auburn, Calif. while recuperating from a brief illness.
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Fri., Aug. 8, at Mount Vernon Memorial Park, 8401 Greenback Lane in Fair Oaks, CA.
Born on May 14, 1932 in Hoxie, Ark. to parents Josephyne Smith (Belk) and Isaac Smith, the Smith family migrated to Calif. prior to WWII in the fashion of Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath” working their way west toward a better opportunity. Jo Ann graduated from Roseville High School in 1950 and Sacramento State College in 1954 majoring in education. With her degree and Teaching Certificate she began her teaching career in the Orangevale/Fair Oaks area. She married Ronald Bell of Citrus Heights in June 1954. They resided in Fair Oaks before moving to the Loomis area where Jo Ann retired from teaching the early grades at Loomis Union Grammar School, the same school that she graduated from when the Smith family lived in and near Loomis.
Jo Ann loved reading, family gatherings, remembering humorous stories from her teaching days and raising the boys. She enjoyed her occasional telephone talks with the ‘Arkansas cousins.’ Always with a positive attitude, Ann will be fondly remembered by her wit and readiness to see the good of all people.
She is survived by her brother, Alan Smith of Woodland; sons, Ronnie (Kathy) Bell of Sisters, Ore.; their children, Jason and Megan, Robert Bell (ex-wife Cindy); their children, Lisa and her children ,TJ, Gerald, and Braidon and Michael of Auburn; Rick Bell (Trevlyne) of Auburn and their children, Christina, Eric, Samantha and Bethanie.
Jo Ann was preceded in death by her parents and older brothers, John D. Smith and Leslie V. Smith.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Foothill Center For Spiritual Living (FCSL) in Auburn, CA. A 10 a.m. graveside service will be held Friday, August 8, at Mount Vernon Memorial Park, 8401 Greenback Lane in Fair Oaks, CA.
