Lorraine Maylum of Grass Valley, Calif., passed away suddenly on Monday, July 7, 2014 at home. She was 85.
The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on July 22 at Peace Lutheran Church, 828 W. Main St., Grass Valley. A reception will follow.
She was born on Nov. 23, 1928, in Buffalo, N.Y., the daughter of Frank and Jeanette (Ograbisz) Chmiel.
Lorraine attended Catholic schools and graduated from business college in Buffalo. She was an executive secretary for many years for various aerospace corporations, including Boeing Corp. She finished her career at Shearson-Lehman Financial Co.
Lorraine met Bob Maylum in Calif. in 1968. They were married May 8, 1970, at the Garden Grove Community Church. They raised a loving, blended family of one daughter and three sons.
Lorraine and Bob moved to Grass Valley in 1999. Here, Lorraine became involved in the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, eventually serving on the board. She was also active in the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.
Lorraine and Bob also joined Peace Lutheran Church, where she became active in hospitality and organizing events.
The couple enjoyed traveling for years: They took their grandchildren touring in a motorhome all over the United States during the summers, and took several cruises. She especially enjoyed touring the New England states.
“Hospitality” is the single word that best defined Lorraine. It was impossible for her to be without food, drink and a well-appointed environment for the pleasure of serving her family and guests.
She is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Bob Maylum; children Beverly, Henry, David and Jim; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Cancer Center of Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital. Checks may be made to SNMH Foundation, P.O. Box 1810, Grass Valley, CA 95945; write “Cancer Center” in the memo line.
