Obituary of Wess Lyell

John Wesley “Wess” Lyell went home to be with his Lord May 17, 2014, as a result of a fall at home.

There will be a celebration of life at 2 p.m. on Sat., June 21. It will be at the Buttermaker’s Cottage at Western Gateway Park, 18560 Penn Valley Drive in Penn Valley.

He was born Oct. 29, 1937, in Los Angeles, son of Walter and Juanita Lyell.

Wess graduated from Hemet High School in 1955.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1956 to 1960. In 1960, Wess married Constance Fischer. They had four children: two sons and two daughters.

In 1982, the family moved to Grass Valley where he built a home 13 miles from town. Wess wanted to “get away” and became a “mountain man.”

Wess and Bev moved to Brookings, Ore., where they have lived for the past 12 years.

He loved fishing, hiking, camping, traveling and made beautiful jewelry as a hobby. He and Bev were volunteer firefighters.

He was also a member of the VFW Post 966 and a founding member of the Coastal Hour Exchange Barter Club.

Wess dearly loved his wife, Beverly, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and his many friends. He had a big heart and would help anyone in need.\

Wess was a great storyteller and had a great sense of humor. His greatest passion was in loving the Lord and serving Him faithfully.

For many years, he led Bible study and planted seeds of the Lord in many hearts.
