Cathryn Irene Savage died peacefully at home on Friday, Feb. 21, 2014.
A memorial service will be at 12 p.m. on Monday, March 3, 2014, at United Methodist church, 433 Broad St. in Nevada City, Calif.
Cathryn was born on Sept. 17, 1923, in San Pedro, Calif., to Carl and Minnie Holmes. Cathryn attended school in San Pedro and graduated from Narbonne High School, where she was president of the Jane Adams Club.
Cathryn married Levi M. Savage Jr. on Feb. 9, 1941, and raised three children in Torrance, Calif. Cathryn was a wife and homemaker extraordinaire, as well as an integral member of the community, serving as secretary and president of the Women’s Guild at Seaside Community Church in addition to many Bible study and community groups.
Cathryn moved to Nevada City in 1974, where she helped Levi build their dream house and a rich life in their new community. She was a longtime member of the Nevada City United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, PEO and Civic Club. She volunteered at the food bank and as a pink lady at the hospital. In 1989, Cathryn and Levi moved to Grass Valley, Calif., where she lived until her death.
Cathryn will be remembered as a beautiful, elegant and refined lady with a feisty sense of humor and humility that caught you off guard. Her eyes would twinkle, and you could tell her soul was smiling. Cathryn’s gift of hospitality and thoughtfulness was a central element to her grace, and always had a way of making those around her feel special and loved. She was proud of her family, and her intelligence and wisdom provided guidance and mentorship to help them achieve their dreams. Cathryn loved to play the piano, and music was an important part of her life. Her artistic side also was portrayed through the beautiful cakes she decorated and lovingly volunteered to make for friends and relatives on their special occasions.
She is survived by her son, Lee (Carolyn) Savage of Santa Barbara; daughters Cathy Zyskowski of Penn Valley and Ann (Tim) Brown of St. Croix, USVI.; grandchildren Jeff Savage, Jennifer McAnally, Michelle Savage, Kirsten Bay, Tim “Bo” Brown, Nicole Brown and Alexander Brown; great-grandchildren Zach Zyskowski (who was like a grandson), Kaitlin, Connor and Sam Savage, Gavin Francissen, Levi Brown, Bradley McPartlin and Luke Foster; and nephews Joey and Tim Buffalo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Levi M. Savage; sister, Helen Buffalo; and niece, Bonnie Buffalo.
Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of the Foothills and the food bank.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper & Weaver Mortuary.
