Annual Law Day Celebration honors student writers

The Nevada County Bar Association announces the annual Law Day celebration, a reception and dinner to be held at the Holbrooke Hotel beginning at 5 p.m. on Oct. 24. The event will honor local high school students for excellence in writing on the legal topic, “Realizing the Dream, Equality for All.” Specifically, the students have written essays discussing the recent United States Supreme Court decision on the Voting Rights Act, known as Shelby County v. Holder.

The annual Law Day essay contest for high school students began in 1978, when local lawyer Ray Shine and English teacher Mike Blake decided to create an event that would recognize academic excellence at the high schools with a trophy for best essay. The American Bar Association’s national Law Day event provided an incentive for lawyers to create community events to educate the public about the judicial branch of our government. Traditionally, the events have involved students.

From the beginning, the Nevada County Bar Association sponsored the event by organizing a banquet to honor the best writers at local high schools and to reward academic excellence, first with U.S. Savings Bonds and later with scholarship money donated by the Bar.

Over the years the event evolved, but local attorneys and judges have gathered each year to recognize the essay efforts of high school students and to promote public discussion of important legal concepts.

For 2013, the Bar has obtained the participation of Justice Elena Duarte, of the Third District Court of Appeals, who will provide keynote remarks. She will be joined by local former judge, now Justice Kathleen Butz. Also attending will be most of the Nevada County Superior Court judges.

Attendance is open to the public, but seating is limited. Cost for the evening, including a buffet dinner, is $50 per person. Advance reservation and payment is required.
