Local Forest Service Employee earns national law enforcement award


Melissa Ewing, law enforcement program support assistant for the Tahoe National Forest and the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, was named the recipient of the national 2012 Law Enforcement and Investigations Outstanding Administrative Support Services award. She will be recognized at a Director’s Award Dinner and Ceremony on Sept. 25 in Atlanta, Ga.

Ewing, a Forest Service employee since 1999, has been in her current position since 2007 and has consistently earned positive feedback from supervisors, co-workers, and cooperators while independently taking on extra projects to improve services and resolve difficulties.

Ewing’s willingness to tackle additional tasks is well-known both inside the agency and with local and regional law enforcement counterparts. For example, last year after other key personnel had retired and left a void, she took on the challenge of completing and editing an off-highway vehicle grant within the state’s required deadlines.

With minimal input from other departments, she contacted state personnel and ensured the grant was submitted properly and on time. Additionally, state personnel asked for her help when an error found in another national forest’s grant application affected all 18 national forests’ allocations.

Ewing coordinated necessary changes under her supervisor’s direction and helped bring successful closure to the effort.

Law enforcement work seems to be Ewing’s legacy. Her father is a retired police lieutenant, and her husband is a police officer. Several other family members also work in law enforcement.

She began her own career at Mountain View Police Department in the 1990s and uses that experience along with her human resources background to benefit both the Forest Service and its partners. Ewing works closely with multiple county sheriffs, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Department of Justice, college deans, and others to support background checks, training, and other cooperative efforts.

“Melissa’s positive and infectious personality combined with her technical and problem-solving skills makes her a part-time employee who provides full-time effort, always with a smile,” said her supervisor, Patrol Captain Gary Barnett. “I am delighted she is being recognized nationally for her excellent work.”
