Man arrested in taqueria burglary

An early-morning burglar at a South County taqueria reportedly left evidence behind that he was about to make himself a meal. But instead, the 32-year-old suspect ended up in county jail.

Nevada County Sheriff’s deputies responded to an alarm call just after 1 a.m. Sunday to El Agave Taqueria in the 10000 block of Combie Road, said Sheriff Keith Royal.

They arrived to find firefighters already had responded to the call and had established a perimeter, Royal said.

A witness told deputies he had seen a person inside the business with a flashlight, and firefighters saw a man matching that description in the parking lot of the business, according to Royal.

Nothing appeared to be missing from the business, but deputies did locate a broken beer bottle. They also found two refrigerators open and packaged meat on the counter, Royal said.

A backpack was found inside the restaurant that was identified as belonging to Kenneth James Sanchez, 32, of Carmichael.

Deputies then located Sanchez in a darkened corner of the parking lot, Royal said. Sanchez reportedly told them he is supposed to take medication for an unspecified mental health condition, and he hadn’t taken it.

“He said he couldn’t recall what he had been doing,” Royal said.

He was arrested on suspicion of second-degree burglary and an outstanding misdemeanor warrant and was being held in lieu of $12,500 bail.
