Brunswick Certified Farmers Market opens
The Brunswick Certified Farmers Market is now under way at the Nevada County Horsemen Grounds. Opening night was last week, and the eight or nine family farmers who showed up offered a variety of fruit and vegetables. This market is funded and produced by the Yuba Foodshed Alliance, a rapidly growing group of family farmers dedicated to sustainable farming and working with other farmers in our foodshed to provide farm-direct produce and other farm products.
Some farmers are certified organic and some are not. But all of the farmers are family farmers who have signed and abide by a farmers pledge — that is, they have pledged not to use any products that contain GMOs, always to use sustainable farming practices, treat livestock humanely, use no antibiotics, reject the use of synthetic pesticides, pay a living wage and conserve resources. You can read the entire pledge at http://farmfreshonline.com.
The Farm 2 Family Brunswick Farmers Market is also a distribution point for FarmFreshOnline, an online local food marketplace, which is currently signing up members and is offering a free membership to those who want to buy and sell farm and food products.
Next week at the Brunswick Certified Farmers Market, more farmers will take part and it will begin taking EBT through California’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The Nevada County Horsemen Association is hosting this event, and it is being managed by Grizzly Hill Organic Farm. There is plenty of free, nearby parking and easy access, whether stopping for a minute to load up on some very fresh produce for the weekend or sitting back in the shade under the tall pines and having a handmade Lazy Dog Ice Cream Bar.
The Farm 2 Family Brunswick Farmers Market takes place 4:30-8 p.m Fridays on Brunswick Road. For information, email info@farm2familydirect or visit http://farm2familydirect.com.
