Doors will be open in western Nevada County from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 4 for the Sierra Straw Home Tour, when several gracious homeowners invite the public to experience their natural, creative, efficient dwellings.
Built with straw, each of these homes is unique. A timbered home uses straw with clay compressed between the timber frames. Six others are built using sustainable straw bales with plasters ranging from lime to clay. If you have wondered about how the construction of a bale home really proceeds, you can check it out at one of these homes which is under construction so the structure is still revealed.
As individual as the people who live in them, these homes are created using natural materials, both energy efficient and healthy for occupants and the planet.
CASBA, the California Straw Building Association, a nonprofit association, is sponsoring this event. Proceeds will support the work and testing needed to incorporate straw building in the International Building Code.
Tickets are $10 and are available online at CASBA’s website, www.strawbuilding.org, or from two Grass Valley locations; Sons Development and Green Building Materials, 583 Idaho Maryland Road, and BriarPatch Co-op Natural Foods Community Market, 290 Sierra College Drive.
