Authors to discuss Gold Rush history

Nevada County Historical Society

Join us for the Nevada County Historical Society’s monthly ‘Speaker Night’ presentation on Thursday, April 18, and participate in a Gold Rush History. Not just a lecture, it will feature a lively discussion between Ronald James and Robert Stewart about their new book The Gold Rush Letters of E. Allen Grosh and Hosea B. Grosh. The volume of more than 80 letters sent from California to their father in Pennsylvania speak of the hopes and frustrations of two young men who based a part of their operations on Deer Creek, Nevada County. The extensive annotations by editors James and Stewart flesh out the well-written letters of two intelligent, thoughtful young Argonauts from Pennsylvania. James, author of a number of books on Nevada history, recently retired as Nevada Historic Preservation Officer. Copies of the book, published by the University of Nevada Press in 2012, will be available for purchase and both editors will be signing after the discussion. The presentation, one of a monthly series, is held in the Conference Room of the Madelyn Helling Library in Nevada City; it is open to the public, and admission is free. Refreshments provided. Presentation starts at 7 p.m.
